Introduction

The Bible and many ancient traditions start at the beginning of the universe. This is a perfect place to begin if we are just starting to wake up to truth. But let us look at the time before the beginning. Understanding this moment is vital. It gives a foundation to anyone seeking self-knowledge, anyone wanting a deeper relationship with God, and any scientific mind exploring a new model of reality.

What Was Before?

Think back to the time before creation. Before living creatures, before the Earth, the sun, or the Milky Way. Before matter itself existed—what was it like?

There was nothing our five senses could experience. But that does not mean there was emptiness. It just means our physical tools—like seeing, hearing, and feeling—are the wrong tools for this reality. To understand it, we must use different tools: consciousness and awareness.

Consciousness

All living creatures are aware of their surroundings. We see this in single-celled microbes, in fish, in mammals, and in humans. This act of noticing is what we call awareness.

Living creatures also have consciousness. This is how they respond to what they notice. It can be a simple reflex, or a complex thought process like a human mind. But humans are unique: we are aware of our own consciousness.

Consciousness grows and evolves from life experiences. It is a result of living. But awareness is different—it is constant across the universe.

Awareness

Before the universe and humans existed, pure awareness was all there was. This awareness had not yet been named ‘God.’ Out of respect, we will call it Divine Awareness.

To keep things clear, we need to separate everyday awareness from Divine Awareness. They are not two different things; they are the exact same thing. But as we talk, it helps to know if we mean awareness inside the universe, or the Divine Awareness that existed before the universe.

Divine Awareness

Divine Awareness is not a frozen, static state. It is a perfect blend of knowing and being.

Remember, we are talking about reality before space, before matter, and before the human concept of time. There was no past or future. There was only awareness in the present moment.

This is not like earthly awareness, which watches or focuses on specific things. Divine Awareness is all-encompassing and all-knowing. It was simply aware of itself, because there was nothing else to perceive. It was total and complete.

God – A Dynamic Activity

It is easy to think that before creation, there was only a void. We might assume God was asleep for millions of years. But true emptiness did not exist, because there were no physical eyes to see a lack of objects. Instead, there was fullness.

All that existed was God. He was complete, aware, and self-contained. Divine Awareness is a constant, living activity of knowing.

God – The Absolute

God was all that existed. There was no place where God was not. Because He is everywhere, we say God is omnipresent.

God’s power is a vast, loving energy that creates and sustains everything. It leaves no room for any other power. Because He holds all power, we say God is omnipotent.

God’s being is absolute truth. Because He is awareness itself, there is nothing He does not know. To this day, we say God is omniscient—all-knowing.

God – Is Love

This constant activity of awareness and knowing is what we call Love. Do not confuse this with the human emotional act of loving. At its deepest level, Love is pure knowing. It requires nothing, expects nothing, and does not judge. God is not harsh or distant; the very nature of Divine Awareness is Love.

Think of a mother sitting in a dark room, holding her sleeping baby. Her mind is silent. She is completely fulfilled, ready to respond to any need. This is unconditional love. It has no expectations. It accepts everything, embraces imperfections, and allows the child to simply be. It is a total commitment to care. God is that love—always present, always full, and always sustaining.

God – Unity

God is always in perfect harmony.

• Love is the activity of pure awareness.

• Love is the unity where all opposites disappear.

• Love is the living movement of divine self-knowing.

• Love is God knowing Himself.

God – Karma and Opposites

Divine Awareness is a constant movement in the present moment. The ‘now’ is never frozen; it is always evolving, yet always in perfect balance. God cannot be less or more than all that is. He is fluid, changing smoothly and easily, but the total sum of God is always neutral.

Humanity has noticed this balance through Karma. Karma is the balancing of opposing forces. When any action is set in motion, an opposite reaction rises to maintain balance.

God – The Creative Power

If God is all-knowing, all-present, and all-powerful, how did the universe begin?

As we see in Karma, opposing forces always move toward balance. All the opposites that exist in our universe live inside God. If one side increases, an equal and opposite side rises to keep the peace. We have looked at how God is everything. God is in perfect balance.

But now, consider this: what would happen if God remained in balance, but created a space within Himself where He was not?

Imagine the water of a lake being pulled completely to the sides, leaving the very center empty. If that water were suddenly allowed to equalize, an enormous wave of energy would rush back to the middle.

Now, imagine that same space, but inside God, and on an infinite scale. When it equalized, the rush of energy would be absolute. What we would witness is exactly what we call the ‘Big Bang.’
