Islam is one of the world’s major religions, with over a billion followers globally. It originated in the 7th century CE in Mecca, a city in present-day Saudi Arabia. The Prophet Muhammad, whom Muslims revere as the last in a line of prophets including figures such as Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, founded Islam.
The word “Islam” means “submission” in Arabic, signifying the religion’s central tenet: submission to the will of God, or Allah. Those who follow Islam are known as Muslims, meaning “those who submit.”
The core beliefs of Islam are articulated in the Five Pillars: Shahada (faith), Salah (prayer), Zakat (charity), Sawm (fasting), and Hajj (pilgrimage). The Shahada is the declaration of faith: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His prophet.” This affirmation expresses the monotheistic essence of Islam.
Salah involves praying five times a day facing the Kaaba in Mecca. These prayers occur at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and nightfall, signifying a Muslim’s daily commitment to their faith. Zakat is the giving of alms to the poor, usually a set proportion of a Muslim’s savings. Sawm is the fast during the holy month of Ramadan, a time of reflection, prayer, and community. Finally, the Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim should undertake at least once in their lifetime if they are financially and physically able.
The holy book of Islam is the Quran, believed to be the word of God as revealed to Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel. It is considered the final and most perfect revelation, following earlier messages received by other prophets. It provides guidance on all aspects of life, including moral, ethical, legal, and societal matters, as well as personal conduct and the relationship between God and humanity.
In addition to the Quran, the Hadiths, sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad, serve as an important source of law, guidance, and moral instruction for Muslims.
Islam is not just a religion but a comprehensive way of life, encompassing social, economic, and political activities. It strongly emphasizes community, justice, and the obligation to work towards the betterment of society.
Muslims see themselves as part of a global community, known as the Ummah. Despite their diverse cultures, languages, and traditions, Muslims around the world share a unified understanding of their faith.
